East Woodhay

A scorching day and a superb pitch and outfield greeted the Refreshers on Sunday 20th July. We beat East Woodhay last year and were expecting a revenge attempt; as it was we had them at 125 for 6 after 25 overs and were keeping it quite tight (H Nosworthy 4 wickets) until numbers 7 and 8 strode in and thumped the score to 279 for 6 by the end of 40 overs. 150 in the last 15 overs made for easy maths but was not quite what the doctor had ordered; it also gave us an overall target to win of 7 per over.

Their opening bowlers were fast and tight and gave little away; when Woodhay opened the tap a little Sam Burrett (57) and Jon Nosworthy (51) took full advantage and for a while we dared to dream; ultimately these things never last and despite some more lusty hitting from one of the other Nosworthy brothers and a non-cricketer friend of Harry’s (19 in five shots) we fell short by some 70 runs, coincidentally not far off the margin by which England were losing to India at Lords.
