CHECKENDON
The Refreshers season ended on a high at Checkendon, when we recorded another satisfying victory against Checkendon CC, one of longest and friendliest fixtures. David Alexander and Sam produced a superb lunch from the back of the Land Rover, we were put in to bat and set to it with gusto. The Skeltons and Mohindrus were in the action with Abbi Mohindru making 53 and Milo Skelton 32. Others contributed along the way, including Andy Gardiner who scored some runs (30) but was closely involved in two mindless run outs that brought our innings to an abrupt end quarter of an hour before half time. Still, 184 looked defendable on a good pitch and slow outfield, and so it proved. Owen Roach and Richard Saunders kept the oppo very quiet for a few overs but it was the spinners who posed the questions, Milo Skelton, Anu Mohindru and Philip Cayford taking wickets at important moments.
Milo finished with 4 wickets and took the best caught and bowled that any of us had ever seen – a straight drive four inches off the deck and going like a bullet. Owen came back at pace and hit the stumps a couple times and it was suddenly all over with Gardiner, striving for redemption, picking up the last wicket. It was already dusk as we repaired to the Black Horse, an impossibly pretty rural pub a long way up a country lane, and toasted a particularly successful season. Pip pip!
