Refreshers v Kew, 11 August 2019

Sunday 11 August 2019 saw the Refreshers play their second ever fixture at Kew. It’s a glorious ground, on the Green directly in front of the entrance to Kew Gardens. The game brought a decent crowd of pub goers enjoying a drink at the Cricketers, churchgoers spilling out of St Anne’s church next to the ground and tourists visiting the Gardens. Unfortunately, despite the passing interest and a strong side, the Refreshers were not quite on their best form with the bat.

Batting first, on a wicket that was strangely wet, not from rain, but from the groundsman having watered both ends just before the game, the Refreshers posted 172. There were strong knocks from Darren Almeida (39), Leo Buscombe (27), James Finch (25) and Shiv Haria-Shah (22) but unfortunately, with a hard outfield and an improving wicket, anything under 200 was going to be difficult to defend.

That is not to say the Refreshers did not come close. Some outstanding fast bowling from Owen Roach (4-27) and spin from Milo Skelton (1-31), ably assisted with some unlucky spells of pace from James Finch and Shiv Haria-Shah, saw Kew lose seven wickets and the Refreshers look they might clinch the game. However, Kew’s overseas player proved the difference between the two sides and, with 57, managed to steer Kew home to a win.

The loss aside, it was a fabulous day’s cricket and a wonderful place to play. We look forward to playing Kew again next year. The game is a great addition to our fixture list.
