Refreshers CC v Greys Green CC – 3 June 2017
A beautiful Saturday, feeling like the start of summer at Greys this year.
The pitch was perfect (with grateful thanks as ever to Dennis and Mick at GGCC)
We went into bat slightly conscious that by kick off we were only 9 – plus ca change!
So a usual start. RCC 15 for 3…. Then 92 for 4 with Saunders losing his bat to a top edge… but then the Mohindru show kicked in. This year we were blessed with 3, including the 11 year progeny of brother Abhi. And what a star – he batted with uncle Anu for the first time having driven with his dad all the way from Newport. Such a pleasure to watch, he was the star of the day and batted and later bowled beautifully. We then batted well and even I enjoyed some proper time at the crease with the mighty club captain who, seeing the cherry like a football, went on to carry his bat for a brilliant 120. We were a surprising 201 at tea after some very good bowling from GGCC (particularly from our friend Mr Shafqat who bowled 13 overs and later went on to hit 52 not out – the day’s star all- rounder).
Greys Green brought experience to bear immediately with a wonderful opening partnership boasting a combined age of 147!
They battled well but we bowled even better and kept them down. Dan Burton bowled quickly and aggressively (a warm up for the Lawyer World Cup performance no doubt) retuning very impressive figures of 8 overs for 11 with 5 maidens. But, true to form, we couldn’t get them out. GGCC finished on 121 for 6 for a drawn match, but as ever what a lovely day on the other side of Henley.
How quickly the day was changed by a return to London. 3 June 2017 will sadly forever be known as the day that London Bridge was attacked by a hideous and perverse ideology. Senseless deaths.
Life like cricket though goes on and back to Greys Green in 2018 we shall be – Inshallah!
