Chelsea Arts Club 4th July
A strong Refreshers side rolled a somewhat depleted CAC over this year. Playing at Harrow, we won the toss and batted. In our 35 overs we posted 206; respectable, albeit below the potential of a line-up which included Michael Edwards, Leo Buscombe, Owen Roach, Sarbie, Henry Law and Chris Bell. After tea John Maynard (“the dentist”) and Leo Buscombe got to work and within 6 overs the result looked inevitable – at 10 for 2 there was no coming back and the Chelsea Artists were bowled out for 85 in just 24 overs. We all bowled pretty well; Maynard, Buscombe, Sarbie, Law and two Bells (Chris and 15 year old Harrovian, Jack) wrapped it up with Cayford and Roach not required. Our fielding was good with some excellent catches all held (Buscombe, Edwards, Roach, Jack Bell, Mark and even Keith Hornby holding on to a steepling chance straight out of the sun. Michael Edwards’ effort – a diving, one handed cracker in front of first slip deserves special mention. It was a shame that the CAC Club Secretary, David Maddocks, was unable to play this year as we had been looking forward to his duel with The Dentist (he was in Thailand, apparently) but always good to see the CAC stalwarts including Nick Singleton, Henry Dodswell and, of course, Charles ‘killer’ Payne who rounded the day off in his usual style with a bottle of Verve Cliquot.
