Norfolk Weekend
Dire predictions of ceaseless rain proved completely unfounded but our Friday fixture at Salle was called off nonetheless -at 3.30, long after we had set off. Adney Payne provided his traditional seafood platter which compensated for a humiliating defeat at the skittles, and England’s footballers beat Sweden which provided an inspiring backdrop to the Friday evening beerfest. Holkham was a different matter. A good Refreshers team batted first and put up 240 for 5 in our 40 overs. Anu batted beautifully for 80 while Rob Cook (38) and Marcus Haywood (52 n.o.) did their fair share of plundering with help from Richard Saunders (21) and the Faulks brothers. After an excellent tea Richard Saunders bowled his 8 overs on the trot and finished with 2 for 10, offering swing and variety and generally bowling beautifully. Edward Faulks, Marcus Rob Cook, Cayford and Oliver sells also bowled, the latter proving a particular challenge to Holkham’s lower order. Keith Hornby’s wicket keeping can only be described as extraordinary but he had the 14 men on the pitch at any one time in tears of laughter for much of the afternoon. Despite Keith’s best efforts, however, it was Anu who made the man of the match award his own by recording figures of 8 overs, 3 maidens, 5 wickets for 4 runs in addition to his earlier knock of 80. Holkham capitulated for 83 in 30 overs, only Will Bale (32) and John Goulding (18) offering much resistance. Our hosts were as welcoming as always, reminding us why this is always one of our favourite games of the season. later Philip and Nicola Curl entertained everyone back at Brisley Hall with an excellent barbecue that rolled on late into the night and Richard Saunders was awarded the captain’s tie – a most enjoyable evening and we are very grateful for the Curls’ generous hospitality.
