Refreshers v Turks

 In Uncategorized

A strong looking Refreshers side on paper was slightly weakened by a few late drop outs. Morale was still high nonetheless for the final game of the season against Richard Warlow’s Turks CC.

With Refreshers players caught in various traffic jams in Kent, Warlow and Edwards cooked up the toss and the Refreshers batted first. The pitch was green and damp, the weather autumnal.

Stewart and Law batted very solidly against a good opening attack, which included a very talented 12 year old who was too good for most of our top order. Stewart dealt almost only in 6s, hitting two big ones before being bowled for 14. Tom Burton played well for his 4 (we were amazed it was so few) before Nosworthy came in and batted in his usual kamikaze style. Law continued to bat very solidly and scored an excellent 43 on a very difficult wicket. Nosworthy went for 15. Edwards came in and scored 17 which, with Law, took the score past 100. Wickets then tumbled and we were all out for 135 in 32 overs. Not bad but we had thought that 160 was about par.

A great tea was then taken, the scones with cream and jam were particularly good.

We thought Dan Burton would be a handful on this minefield and he was, removing both of their openers for very few. We were very much in the game. Unfortunately, the wickets brought in the South African overseas from the league club down the road. He was a genuine First XI batsman and was in the mood for some late season runs. He scored a brutal 61 not out, hitting some 6s which were at least twice as big as Stewart’s earlier in the day. Very good to watch but really killed the game as a contest. Warlow was mortified.

6 bowlers were used in total so everyone chipped in. Nosworthy sadly had another bout of the yips so was quickly pulled. Hale and Law both bowled well in support of Burton.

They got the runs in 19 overs, 4 down. Had Anu played and their SA overseas not, it would have been a great contest. A great fixture all the same on a beautiful ground, against a very nice bunch of guys.

Roll on 2018!!!!!
